Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers about buying, pricing and transfers – anything else, just ask.

Choosing the right name

Why choose a short five-letter .com instead of a descriptive keyword domain?

A short brandable name belongs to you, not to a keyword. It is easier to say, spell and remember, it can grow with your business beyond a single product, and it is quick to type. Google’s own search team advises picking a name you can build on for the long run rather than one stuffed with keywords.

Why .com? Are .io, .ai, .net or new endings not just as good?

.com is still the ending people type by default and the one most associated with established businesses worldwide. Other endings can work for specific industries, but a .com avoids lost visitors and mistyped addresses. Which one is right depends on your market and your audience.

Is a premium domain worth the price for a startup with a small budget?

A premium name is an investment in credibility and recognition. It will not replace a good product, but a short, memorable .com makes your brand easier to find, trust and recommend. If the full price is a stretch, ask us about payment options.

Will a short brand domain help my Google ranking?

Not directly. Google has said that keywords in a domain name give no ranking bonus. The benefit of a short brand domain is indirect: people remember it, type it in directly and search for it by name, which builds the direct and brand traffic that helps any website grow.

How do I know whether a name is right for my business?

Say it out loud, spell it, and see whether you still remember it a day later. If people get it right the first time, it works. Our page on what makes a .com name brandable lists the five qualities we look at.

How do I check that the name has no negative meaning in other languages?

Say the name out loud, search it on Google and in a translator, and ask native speakers in your target markets. Invented names are usually neutral, but a quick check avoids unpleasant surprises.

What do the names on the cards stand for?

The short descriptions on the cards are ideas to spark your imagination, not restrictions. Every name can be used in any industry, as long as it does not infringe a third party’s trademark.

Should I also check social media handles and other domain endings?

Yes, check before you buy: look up the name on Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, X and YouTube, and think about whether you also want .net or .org variants. Social media handles are not part of a domain purchase.

Finding and evaluating a domain

I can’t find the right name – can you help me find one?

Yes. Tell us your industry, the style you like, the preferred length and your budget through the contact form, and we will suggest fitting names from our collection.

Has the domain been used before, and is its history clean?

On request we will tell you what we know about a domain’s age and previous use. We also recommend checking yourself: the Wayback Machine shows past website content, and blacklist checkers show spam flags.

Are the logos and images shown on this site included in the purchase?

Not automatically. Logos, graphics and other visualizations on this website are illustrations that help you picture a name in use. They are not part of a domain purchase unless we agree on it separately. If you like a visualization, ask us and we can talk about it together with the domain.

Can I get a logo together with the domain?

The logos on this website are illustrations and not part of a domain purchase by default. If you like one, ask us and we can agree on it together with the domain.

May I use the logo shown on the website for mockups or pitches before I buy?

You are welcome to look at them, but please do not publish them or use them as your own branding before a purchase or a written agreement. If you need one for a pitch, ask us first.

Can you create a custom logo or brand identity for the domain I buy?

Possibly – ask us. Tell us what you need (logo, colours, mockups) and we will tell you whether we can help or recommend a designer.

Who owns the rights to a logo, and can it be registered as a trademark?

What is transferred depends on what we agree in writing, and we clarify usage rights before any logo changes hands. Copyright and trademark protection of a logo depend on the country and on how it was created, so please get legal advice before relying on it as a protected asset.

Trust and safety

Who is behind Domain Unicorns, and can I trust you?

Domain Unicorns is run by Daniel from Germany and focuses on short, memorable .com domains. You can find our full company details in the Legal Notice, and you can reach Daniel directly by email or WhatsApp.

How can I be sure you really own the domain?

Marketplaces typically verify that a seller controls a domain before it is listed, and the domain is only handed over once your payment is secured. If you want extra reassurance, ask us and we will walk you through the process.

Is it safe to buy a domain from you – how is my payment protected?

When you buy through a marketplace, your payment is handled by the platform and, depending on the platform, held in escrow until the domain has been transferred to you. If you buy directly from Daniel, he explains the safest way to pay and transfer before you pay anything. Details differ by marketplace, so check the buyer protection shown on the listing.

Price

How much does a domain cost – what is the typical price range?

Prices depend on the individual name and on the marketplace. The live listing shows the current price or lets you make an offer. If you are unsure whether a name fits your budget, send a short enquiry and you will get a straight answer.

Why don’t you show prices directly on this website?

Marketplace fees and taxes can change the final price depending on where you buy, so we point you to the live listing instead of showing a number here that might be out of date.

What determines the price of a short, brandable domain?

Length, how easily a name is pronounced and spelled, the .com ending, how flexible it is across industries, and comparable sales on the market. Short, pronounceable five-letter .com names are scarce, which is a large part of their value.

Why can the same domain show different prices on different marketplaces?

Marketplaces charge different fees, taxes and currency conversions, and prices can be set separately for each listing. That is why we point you to the live listing. If you notice a big difference, tell us.

Can I negotiate the price or make a lower offer?

Yes, offers are welcome. Many listings support Make Offer, and Daniel is open to talking about pricing, payment options or bundles of several domains. Whether an offer works depends on the individual domain.

Do you offer a discount if I buy several domains?

We are open to talking about a bundle price. Send us the names you are interested in through the contact form.

How buying works

How do I buy one of your domains?

Type the domain directly into your browser to open its current marketplace listing (Buy Now or Make Offer), or send an enquiry through the contact form. You can also reach Daniel by email or WhatsApp and he will walk you through it.

What happens when I click “Visit domain” – do I leave this website?

The card opens the current marketplace listing in a new tab. Purchase, payment and transfer then happen on the marketplace’s own site. If you prefer personal help, use the contact form instead.

Which marketplaces are the domains listed on?

Our domains are listed on marketplaces including Sedo, GoDaddy, Afternic and atom.com. Prices and available payment options can vary by marketplace.

What is the difference between buying through a marketplace and buying directly from you?

On a marketplace you get its checkout, payment methods and buyer protection, and the price may include platform fees. If you buy directly from us, Daniel handles the process personally and payment and transfer are agreed individually. Either way you receive the same domain.

Do I need an account on the marketplace to buy?

Marketplaces usually ask for a free account to complete a purchase or send an offer. If you would rather not create one, contact us about buying directly.

Is the domain still available? What if it is sold while I am deciding?

The marketplace listing always shows the current status. Domains can be sold at any time, so if you have found a name you love, do not wait too long, or send us a quick message and we will confirm availability.

Can you reserve a domain for me for a few days?

Reservations are not automatic. Ask Daniel whether a short hold is possible for the name you like.

How long does the whole purchase take, from first contact to owning the domain?

With a marketplace the process can be quick: some transfers are started within a day, others take several days depending on the registrars and the payment method. From payment to having the domain in your own account, plan for anything from a few days to about two weeks.

Payment and invoicing

Which payment methods can I use?

Payment methods depend on where you buy. Marketplaces typically offer bank transfer and credit card, and some also PayPal; the listing shows what is available. For a direct purchase, ask Daniel.

Can I pay in installments or with a lease-to-own plan?

Some marketplaces offer payment plans or lease-to-own for selected domains. Look for it in the listing or ask us whether a plan is possible for the name you like.

Which currency do I pay in, and does the price include VAT?

The marketplace shows the final price, currency and VAT where applicable at checkout. For a direct purchase, Daniel confirms currency and tax treatment before you pay. If you need a specific currency, please ask.

Can I get an invoice for my company?

Marketplaces issue receipts or invoices, and for a direct purchase we can issue an invoice on request. Please send us your company details before you pay.

Are there extra costs after the purchase (renewal, transfer fees)?

The price covers the domain name. After the transfer you pay your own registrar the regular registration and renewal fee, usually once a year, and some registrars add a year to the registration when a domain is transferred in. Marketplace fees, if any, are shown at checkout.

Why does the escrow service or marketplace ask me to verify my identity, and how is my data handled?

Marketplaces and escrow services often verify buyers to prevent fraud and money laundering, which can add a day or two. We only process the data needed to handle your enquiry; see our Privacy Policy.

Is my purchase confidential?

We do not publish who buys a domain. After the transfer, the public registration data depends on your registrar’s privacy settings. If confidentiality matters, for example before a launch, tell us beforehand.

Can I buy from outside Germany or the EU?

Yes, we sell worldwide. Payment methods and taxes differ by country and platform, and the marketplace shows what is available at checkout.

Can an agency or lawyer buy a domain on behalf of a client?

Yes. Agencies and advisers can buy for clients. Tell us before the purchase who will be the domain owner and who should receive the invoice, so the transfer goes to the right account.

Are these domains available to anyone, or only companies?

Anyone – individuals, startups and established companies are all welcome. Many of our domains suit a new brand just as well as an existing one looking to upgrade.

Legal and guarantees

How do I check for trademark conflicts before I buy?

Search the name in the trademark registers of your target markets, for example DPMA and EUIPO (TMview) for Germany and the EU, the WIPO Global Brand Database, and the USPTO for the US. Also search Google for similar businesses in your industry. If you are unsure, a trademark attorney can check for you.

Does buying a domain include trademark rights?

No. A domain purchase gives you the domain name, not trademark rights. Before you launch a brand under any name, check trademark availability in your target markets and get legal advice if you are unsure.

Has any of your domains ever been disputed or had a trademark complaint?

We recommend a trademark check before every purchase (see above). If you have concerns about a specific name, ask us and we will tell you what we know.

What happens if the transfer fails – do I get my money back?

Marketplace purchases are protected by the platform’s buyer protection and, where used, an escrow process: the seller is paid only after the domain has been transferred to you. Please check the guarantee shown on the listing. For direct purchases we agree the process with you in writing before payment.

Do I have a right of withdrawal as a consumer?

Whether a right of withdrawal applies depends on who sells, where you live and whether you buy as a consumer or as a business. The terms of the marketplace or of our purchase agreement apply. If this matters to you, please ask before buying.

Domain transfer

How does the domain transfer work once I buy?

The transfer follows the process of the marketplace you buy on. Details such as payment options, buyer protection and timing differ between marketplaces. If you buy directly through Daniel, he will guide you through the transfer step by step.

How does the domain transfer work, step by step?

1) You pay. 2) You tell us (or the marketplace) which registrar you use, for example GoDaddy, Namecheap, Porkbun or IONOS. 3) The seller pushes the domain within the same registrar or releases an auth code. 4) You start or accept the transfer at your registrar. 5) The domain appears in your account.

Which registrar can I use, and do I need an account beforehand?

A registrar is the company where you manage and renew your domain. Create a free account at a registrar of your choice before you pay, so the transfer can start right away. Tell us which one you use; if possible we will match it to speed things up.

What is an auth code (EPP code) and how long is it valid?

An auth code is a one-time password that proves you are allowed to move a domain between registrars. We release it only after payment is secured, and your new registrar asks for it when you start the transfer. Codes are time-limited, at many registrars for around 30 days at most, so start the transfer soon after receiving it.

How long does the transfer take?

Within one registrar a domain can be pushed in minutes to hours. A transfer between registrars with an auth code usually takes several days and in some cases a week or more, depending on the registrars involved.

What is the 60-day transfer lock, and could it delay my purchase?

Under ICANN rules, a domain that was newly registered or recently transferred cannot be moved to another registrar for 60 days. If a domain is affected, we will tell you before you buy.

Can I use the domain (website, email) before the transfer is complete?

Not before the transfer is complete, because until then the domain stays in the seller’s account, unless a special arrangement such as a payment plan has been agreed. Once the domain is in your account you can start right away.

After the purchase

What do I need to do after the transfer – website, email, hosting?

A domain is only the address. Once it is in your registrar account, 1) point it to a website builder or hosting, 2) set up email on your domain through a provider such as Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 or your host, and 3) switch on auto-renew and two-factor login.

How do I protect my domain after the purchase?

Turn on auto-renew, enable two-factor authentication on your registrar account, keep the registrar lock on, keep your contact details up to date and use a strong, unique password. You can also renew for several years in advance.

More questions

Can I resell the domain later or buy it as an investment?

A domain you own is your asset and can be resold. We give no guarantee of resale value and recommend buying primarily to use the name for your brand.

Do you buy domains, or can I list my own domain with you?

Send us the name and your price expectation through the contact form and Daniel will tell you whether it fits our collection.
